What surface should the garbage bin box stand on? The practical guide
In short: The best base for a garbage bin box is level, load-bearing, and permeable. Paving stones, concrete slabs, and poured concrete are the safest options. Lawn, topsoil, and loose gravel are unsuitable because the box sinks and warps. You only rarely need a foundation: For slight unevenness, height-adjustable feet with up to 75 mm of adjustment are sufficient.
Which base is suitable for a garbage bin box?
Any base that is level, load-bearing, and frost-resistant is suitable. In practice, this means paving stones, concrete slabs, poured concrete, or asphalt. These surfaces permanently support the weight of the full bins without yielding.
And the load is the point most people underestimate. A 240-litre bin according to DIN EN 840 measures 580 x 1100 x 740 mm, giving it a footprint of just 0.43 m² (kaiserkraft). Empty, it weighs around 11 kg; when full, several times that. In Germany, household waste amounted to 519 kg per inhabitant per year in 2023 (Federal Environment Agency). With a four-bin box, this load ultimately presses into the ground through just a few feet.

What makes a good base?
Four properties determine whether your box will still close just as neatly after five years as it did on the first day: levelness, load-bearing capacity, frost resistance, and drainage.
Level does not mean perfectly smooth, but free of steps and edges. If the box is standing crooked, the frame will warp slightly. You will notice the effect in the doors and lids, which will then no longer close properly.
Load-bearing means that the ground does not give way under load. And the differences are greater than you might think. According to DIN 1054, well-compacted non-cohesive soil such as sand or gravel supports around 200 kN/m², whereas heavy clay supports only 90 kN/m² (DIN 1054, reproduced by umwelt-online). So on heavy, loamy soil, you have less than half the load-bearing capacity available.
Frost-proof is the point where many DIY constructions fail. If water collects beneath the surface and freezes, the surface rises. In spring, it sinks again, but unevenly. After two or three winters, the box is standing crooked. In Germany and Austria, a depth of around 80 cm or more is generally considered frost-free. The reassuring news: A garbage bin box is not a building and does not require a frost-free foundation. The only important thing is that water does not remain beneath the surface.
Drainage means that rainwater can run off. For paved and slab surfaces, a crossfall of at least 2.5% is the guideline; for water-sensitive soils, 4% is preferable (SLG, Concrete Association). Over a length of two metres, that is just five centimetres and barely visible to the naked eye. The height-adjustable feet then compensate for this slope.
Paving and slabs: the best choice for most gardens
Paving stones and paving slabs are the base we see most often at our customers' properties, and for good reason. They are load-bearing, permeable to water and can be individually readjusted if necessary.
The structure underneath is important. A paved surface consists of more than just stones: Beneath the paving is a 2 to 5 cm layer of grit in its compacted state, below that a base course of gravel, which in practice is 15 to 20 cm thick for areas intended for foot traffic.
This base course is where the real work happens. It must be installed and compacted in layers. The FLL recommendations for areas not subject to vehicle traffic specify a degree of compaction of at least 98% Proctor density and a deformation modulus EV2 of at least 80 MN/m² (FLL specification text, usage category N1). Sounds technical, but in practice it means: rent a vibrating plate compactor and compact the gravel in several layers rather than filling everything in at once.
One detail that causes many DIY builders to fail: The gravel bed is only levelled, not pre-compacted. The stones are then vibrated into place and press themselves into the bed. If you compact the gravel beforehand, you will get an uneven surface. And the slope must already be incorporated into the subbase, not only into the bedding.
If the box is placed on existing paving, it is easy: put it in place, align it and you are done. The adjustable feet compensate for small height differences between individual pavers and open joints. That is exactly what they are there for.

A practical tip from many customer projects: plan the paved area to be slightly larger all around than the box itself. A border of five to ten centimetres on each side is sufficient. This allows you to reach everywhere with a broom when cleaning, and the lawnmower does not constantly bump into the feet.
Concrete and asphalt: durable and maintenance-free
A poured concrete foundation or an asphalt surface is the most stable solution you can get. Concrete does not settle or warp and keeps the box perfectly level for decades.
The disadvantage is the effort involved. Concrete means excavating, constructing formwork, pouring and allowing it to cure. For a garbage bin box, this effort is simply not necessary in the vast majority of cases. It makes sense when you are already creating a new surface or when the location has a steep slope.
There is one small thing to bear in mind with asphalt: on very hot summer days, the surface becomes soft. Concentrated loads such as narrow feet can then leave slight impressions. To prevent this, place a thin plate beneath each foot and distribute the load over a larger area.

Lawn, soil and loose gravel: why this goes wrong
These three surfaces are the most common reason why a garbage bin box starts jamming after a short time. The problem is always the same: concentrated load on soft ground.
On lawns and topsoil, the feet sink in as soon as it rains for an extended period. Because this never happens evenly, the box stands crooked after a few weeks. Doors rub, and lids no longer close properly. In addition, no grass grows beneath the box, while moisture accumulates, and mowing becomes a fiddly task.
With loose gravel, it is similar. Gravel without a compacted subbase behaves almost like a liquid under a concentrated load. The stones move to the side, and the feet sink downward.
Does this mean you have to completely rebuild a gravel area? No. There is a simple solution: Place a concrete slab or paving slab under each foot and press it firmly into the gravel until it is level. This distributes the load over a large area while preserving the appearance of the gravel area. This is the solution we most often recommend to customers with ornamental garden areas.
Does a garbage bin box need a foundation?
In most cases, no. You only need a foundation in the structural engineering sense if there is no load-bearing surface or the location is very steep.

What to do with a slope or uneven ground?
A slight slope is not a problem as long as the box has height-adjustable feet. That is exactly what they are designed for. However, the available adjustment range varies considerably depending on the model range:

Important to understand: The measurement describes the range within which the feet can be adjusted. With Stahlfred and Holzmichl, around 45 mm of this remains to compensate for a slope per individual box. If you need the greatest reserve when levelling, the Alubert made of aluminium with 10 to 75 mm is the most flexible choice.
A note about the Dagobert range: It is not designed for slope compensation. The ground should therefore be as level as possible from the outset.

And what if the slope is steeper? Then simply leveling it is no longer enough. In that case, you need to level the base itself, for example by creating a step in the paving or a small concrete pedestal. How to do this is explained in the foundation guide.
Does the garbage bin box need to be secured to the ground?
It is not strictly necessary. Our metal boxes have enough weight of their own to stand securely in normal weather. Nevertheless, screwing them down makes sense in two situations: at very exposed, windy locations and wherever theft is a concern.
A look at the standard values shows why wind is even an issue: Even in the weakest German wind zone, Zone 1, a basic wind speed of 22.5 m/s is assumed, or around 81 km/h (wind load zones according to DIN EN 1991-1-4). On the coast, it is 30 m/s. A closed box side acts like a sail.
The boxes already have pre-drilled holes in the base rails for this purpose. On concrete or slabs, use suitable wall plugs; on paving, expansion anchors work well. Matching installation sets for concrete paving and concrete are available as accessories, and for the Dagobert range with expansion anchors in two lengths. Important: Align the box completely first, then screw it into place. Doing it the other way around forces the frame into a crooked position and gives you exactly the sticking doors you wanted to avoid.
One detail that is often forgotten: Never drill through the ground rail into an area where pipes or cables might be underneath. In newly landscaped gardens with irrigation systems or underground cables, it is worth checking the plan before drilling.

Does a garbage bin box require approval?
Generally, no. A garbage bin box is a movable structure without a permanent connection to the ground and is therefore not a structure requiring approval. It stands on the base rather than being anchored into it.
Things may look different if you pour a solid foundation, permanently connect the box to it, or build directly on the property boundary. In Austria, the details are governed by the building regulations of the individual provinces; in Germany, by the building regulations of the federal states. They can differ considerably.
Because this varies from one municipality to another, a quick call to the local authority is worthwhile if the location is directly on the boundary with a neighbor or in a residential complex with a homeowners' association. It takes five minutes and can save you a lot of trouble.

What surface is ideal for a garbage bin box?
Paving stones, concrete slabs or a poured concrete surface are ideal. They are level, load-bearing and allow water to drain away. On these surfaces, you can set up the box directly and align it with the adjustable feet, without any additional substructure.
Can I place a garbage bin box on grass?
This is not recommended for permanent installation. The feet sink unevenly when wet, causing the box to stand crooked and the doors to jam. If it has to be placed on grass, install a flush-mounted concrete slab under each foot. This distributes the load and keeps the box level.
Can a garbage bin box be placed on gravel or crushed stone?
Not on loose gravel, and only with limitations on compacted crushed stone. In both cases, the same solution applies: Place a paving slab or concrete slab under each foot and press it in level. The gravel look remains, while the box still stands securely.
How level does the surface really need to be?
Minor unevenness is not a problem. Joints, edges and a slight cross slope are compensated for by the height-adjustable feet, from 15 to 60 mm depending on the model range, and up to 75 mm for the Alubert. The most important thing is that there are no steps or soft spots in the surface.
Do I need to set up the box differently in winter?
No, the location stays the same. Just make sure no water collects under the box and can freeze, causing the surface to rise. A slightly draining surface and clear joints in the paving take care of this on their own.
