In short: 120 liters is usually enough for 1 to 2 people or for biweekly collection with low residual waste volume. 240 liters is the standard size for families of three or more, for the organic waste bin in larger households, and wherever collection happens only every four weeks. Those living in Germany calculate with about 187 kg of household waste per person per year (Destatis, 2025). That is the only number that really matters for size selection.

Why the question of 120 or 240 liters even matters

In 2024, 13.1 million tons of household waste were generated in Germany, which is about 187 kilograms per person (Destatis, 2025). Spread over 26 collections per year (biweekly rhythm), you need to accommodate about 7 kilograms of residual waste per person per collection. Sounds little. In reality, residual waste is light and bulky, not heavy. It fills volume, not weight.

This is exactly why size selection fails if you only calculate by kilograms. The right question is: How many liters of volume do you need per collection interval? And does this bin even fit under your carport, behind the fence, or in your garbage bin box?

Practical tip from Leonding: In our showroom, we place 120- and 240-liter bins physically side by side. Nine out of ten customers who initially say "240 is definitely too big" decide on the larger option after seeing them. The height difference of about 7 cm looks more dramatic in pictures than in person.

How big are 120-liter garbage bins really?

A 120-liter bin according to DIN EN 840 measures approximately 48 cm wide × 55 cm deep × 94 to 100 cm high and weighs 10 to 12 kg empty (kaiserkraft dimensions). The maximum filling weight is around 60 kg. This is the typical choice for a small apartment, a single household, or the organic waste bin in a townhouse.

What 120 liters specifically means: two full 60-liter garbage bags, or in other words, about one week of residual waste for two frugal adults. If household waste is collected weekly, many two-person households manage well with this. With biweekly collection, it gets tight as soon as packaging from furniture delivery, gardening season, or visitors is added.

What most online comparisons overlook: The municipal fee in Austria and Germany is primarily based on bin volume and emptying frequency, not on filling level. A bin that is too small and must be taken to the residual waste collection point in between costs you time and effort, while a bin that is too large costs you a higher annual fee once.

How big are 240-liter garbage bins?

A 240-liter bin according to DIN EN 840 measures about 58 cm width × 73 cm depth × 107 to 110 cm height (kaiserkraft, DIN EN 840). It is therefore not twice as large as the 120-liter bin, but only about 10 cm wider, 18 cm deeper, and 7 to 10 cm taller. The filling limit is around 110 kg.

These exact dimensions are crucial when planning a garbage bin box. A 240-liter bin does not fit in every space designed for 120-liter bins. If you are replacing an existing box, you should first check the internal dimensions. More on this in our guide to the right garbage bin box size and number.

Which garbage bin for a 4-person household?

For a 4-person household, a 240-liter residual waste bin is the standard recommendation, provided it is emptied every two weeks. We calculate about 7 kg of residual waste per person per emptying, which corresponds to roughly 35 to 40 liters per person per interval. Four people thus produce 140 to 160 liters of residual waste every 14 days. A 120-liter bin is regularly full to the brim, while a 240-liter bin still has reserve for garden season or family celebrations.

It’s different with the organic bin. In summer, noticeably more accumulates due to grass clippings and garden fruit than in winter. Many families use 120 liters for residual waste and 240 liters for organic waste because the volume ratio shifts exactly like that in real use. Those who place both sizes side by side will find a suitable box in the Stahlfred combo model for 120 + 240 liters.

Rule of thumb: Which size for which household?

Household Residual waste Organic bin Reasoning
1 person, biweekly 120 L 120 L Single household under 100 kg residual waste/year
2 people, biweekly 120 L 120 L tight, but usually manageable
2 people, every 4 weeks 240 L 240 L Volume reserve needed
3 people, biweekly 240 L 120 L 120 L residual waste regularly becomes too small
4 people, biweekly 240 L 240 L Standard setup
5+ people or shared flat 240 L + second bin 240 L Single bin is not enough

This table applies to Central European separation systems with separate collection of organic waste, paper, and packaging. Where residual waste and packaging are disposed of together (parts of Germany without the Yellow Sack), you usually need one size larger.

Volume, emptying cycle, and waste separation in interaction

The size choice is always a triangle of three factors: volume per bin, emptying interval, and separation quality in the household. Those who consistently put packaging in the yellow sack, organic waste in the organic bin, and paper in the waste paper bin practically halve the residual waste volume. Those who throw everything into residual waste exceed any 240-liter bin.

In Austrian waste statistics, residual waste accounts for only about a quarter of total household waste; the rest goes into separate collection (Statistics Austria: Waste generation). In other words: With good separation, you often manage with the smaller bin, but you need a second (or third) for organic and paper waste. For box planning, this means: the number of bins is usually more important than the individual volume.

Data point from the showroom: An internal evaluation of our consultation talks in the first quarter of 2026 shows: Of 218 documented inquiries, 64% chose 240-liter boxes, 21% chose pure 120-liter solutions, and 15% chose combined setups with both sizes. With each additional family member, the likelihood of choosing at least one 240-liter bin increases significantly.

Which bin color belongs to which waste fraction?

The color coding of garbage bins varies regionally but follows a general pattern:

  • Black or dark gray for residual waste
  • Brown for organic waste
  • Blue for waste paper
  • Yellow or orange for packaging

For the garbage bin box, the bin color does not matter because the bins are hidden inside. You choose the box color based on the exterior look. Anthracite RAL 7016 is BIO Stefan’s best-selling option and is usually cheaper than special colors. For inspiration, you can find examples in our Lookbook with customer projects.

When the larger bin almost always pays off

The 240-liter version is usually the better choice in the following situations, even if you currently think 120 liters is enough:

  1. You have children or are planning to have a child. Diaper phases significantly increase residual waste volume for at least two and a half years.
  2. Your garden is getting bigger or you are redesigning it. Shrub clippings, leaves, and garden fruit go into the organic waste bin.
  3. The emptying schedule is switched to a 4-week cycle. Several municipalities in Austria and Germany have changed this in recent years to reduce personnel costs.
  4. You are planning the box for the next ten years. A bin that is too small annoys you every week, a larger one never does.

If you are about to buy a box, it’s best to first look at the 4 boxes garbage bin box overview, as this is the best-selling family size.

Frequently Asked Questions

How big should the garbage bin be?

Per person and 14-day collection, expect about 35 to 40 liters of residual waste. A 2-person household thus needs around 80 liters (120 is enough), a 4-person family 140 to 160 liters (240 is necessary). In Germany, about 187 kg of household waste per capita was generated in 2024 (Destatis, 2025).

How big is the garbage bin for 2 people?

With biweekly collection, a 120-liter bin is usually sufficient for two adults, provided packaging is separated into the yellow sack. For a four-week rhythm or with a garden, 240 liters is safer because seasonal peaks otherwise won’t fit in the volume.

How big are 120-liter garbage bins externally?

A 120-liter bin according to DIN EN 840 is about 48 cm wide, 55 cm deep, and 94 to 100 cm high. It weighs 10 to 12 kg empty and can hold up to 60 kg of contents. These dimensions are standardized across Europe.

How big is a 240-liter garbage bin in meters?

A 240-liter bin measures about 0.58 m wide, 0.73 m deep, and 1.07 to 1.10 m high. It requires about 0.42 m² of floor space, while a 120-liter bin only needs 0.26 m². When planning box size, allow an additional 5 to 10 cm clearance per bin.

Which garbage bin for 5 people?

A 5-person household usually exceeds a single 240-liter residual waste bin with biweekly collection. Common solutions are two 240-liter bins, a second smaller bin just for organic waste, or switching to weekly collection. Clarify with your municipality if in doubt, as base fees and number of collections affect each other.

Conclusion: Which size suits you?

Three statements to support your decision:

  • 120 liters for one- to two-person households with biweekly collection and consistent separation.
  • 240 liters for all households with three or more people, for the organic bin with a garden, and everywhere where collection is only every four weeks.
  • Both sizes combined, if residual waste and organic waste occur in different amounts, our combo guide 120 + 240 liters is suitable.

Once the size question is settled, it's time to choose the box: you can find all garbage bin boxes in the overview, suitable models for 120 liters in the 120-liter collection, for 240 liters in the 240-liter collection.
